Frequently Asked Questions

Does my car have to be running to qualify for donation?
No, the car must have an engine and be towable. Cars that are in extremely poor condition may be declined, as the cost to tow them may be more than the value of the vehicle.

What if my car won't pass the smog test?
We can accept vehicles without a smog certificate or current registration.

What paperwork do I need?
Just the signed title (pink slip).

What if I lost the title (pink slip)?
As long as you are the legal titleholder, our driver can pick up the vehicle and have you sign a duplicate title, which we will provide.

What paperwork will I need for the DMV?
You will need to sign a bill of sale and a release of liability. Our driver will provide you with all the necessary paperwork. Once you sign the release of liability, you have five days to send it in to the DMV. Our driver will provide you with the address.

Do I get a receipt for my donation?
Yes, you will be given a receipt for your charitable contribution at the time of pick-up.

Will the receipt show the value of my car?
Charitable organizations are not allowed to affix a value to your donation; it is the right and responsibility of the vehicle donor. The receipt will indicate your name, the year, make and model of the vehicle, the condition of the vehicle and Valley Public Television's Federal Tax ID number.

How do I value my vehicle?
You are entitled to take the fair market value of the vehicle in its present condition. You can refer to Kelly Blue Book at www.kbb.com or Nada Guides at www.nadaguides.com as a guideline. You must take into account any mechanical or physical damage to the vehicle when determining its value.

What if my car is valued over $5000?
You will need an independent appraisal. Notify our driver at the time of pick up that you will be claiming value greater than $5,000. The driver will have you sign IRS form 8283, and we will arrange to have the vehicle appraised and the proper forms signed.

What do you do with the vehicles?
The vehicles are sold at a private auction. The proceeds are used to support Valley Public Television. Funds from vehicle donations help Valley Public Television acquire and produce quality educational and inspiring programs and support our outreach efforts in the community.

How quickly can my vehicle be picked up?
Vehicles are picked up at a time that is convenient for you. Appointments can frequently be made the same day, with some Saturday appointments available. Call our representative to find out what times are available in your neighborhood.
